Principles of Trust by Design™
SAFECHAIN™ proposes eight core principles.
1. Transparency
Users should understand:
who the organisation is;
what services are provided;
how decisions are made;
how information is used;
what happens after disclosure;
how complaints are handled.
Transparency reduces uncertainty.
2. Consistency
Trust grows through consistent experiences.
Policies, communications and safeguarding practices should reflect the same values across every interaction.
People should not receive different standards of care depending upon who answers the telephone or responds to an email.
3. Accessibility
Trust cannot exist where services are inaccessible.
Digital platforms should be:
inclusive;
easy to navigate;
compatible with assistive technologies;
written in clear language;
designed for diverse users.
Accessibility demonstrates respect.
4. Participation
Users should have meaningful opportunities to contribute to decisions affecting them.
Participation strengthens:
ownership;
confidence;
engagement;
safeguarding outcomes.
People are more likely to trust systems that recognise their voice.
5. Privacy and Safety
Privacy protections should support—not undermine—trust.
Users should feel confident that their personal information is:
appropriately protected;
handled responsibly;
shared lawfully;
managed transparently.
Trust depends upon safeguarding information as carefully as safeguarding people.
6. Accountability
Organisations should be able to explain:
decisions;
governance arrangements;
safeguarding responsibilities;
quality assurance;

7. Responsiveness
Trust is reinforced when organisations respond promptly and respectfully.
